The swimming pool inspection program works to assure safe and healthy operation of public swimming pools and spas, including water related amusement park rides. The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) contracts with our office to conduct these inspections. They focus on compliance with:
Inspections & Monitoring
Each licensed pool is inspected at least once per year. In addition, water quality is routinely monitored and reported to our office using a monthly operation reporting form (PDF). If water samples show unsafe conditions, the pool is ordered closed until the water quality improves and meets public health standards.
Construction & Remodeling
Construction plans for a new or remodeled pool/spa are reviewed by EGLE to make sure they comply with regulations. A construction permit application (PDF) is needed before construction can start and an inspection is required before the pool can open.
Emergency Response Plans
All licensed pools are required by the Public Health Code to develop an Emergency Response Plan. The plan addresses blood spills and fecal accidents in pools, equipment failure, and water quality problems.
A guide called Suggested Practices for Contingency and Emergency Response Plans (PDF) is available from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
